Wedding Cakes

Wedding cakes are an important part of your wedding breakfast and in fact the history of wedding cakes can be traced as far back as the Roman Empire, before icing was even invented!

The tradition was for the couple to have a loaf of barley bread baked. This loaf would then be sampled by the groom whilst the remainder would be cracked over the bride's head! This was said to have been a symbolism of the groom's dominance over his bride!!

Thankfully, this practice has been tempered and rather than breaking the cake of the bride's head, the couple now have "cutting of the cake" as part of their wedding breakfast ceremony.

Nowadays, there are many, many beautiful examples of wedding cakes and brides go to great lengths to have their cake co-ordinated with other elements of their wedding such as the colour scheme, the theme and the wedding dress.

Wedding cake specialists can create the most ornate wedding cakes out of icing sugar to the extent that these cakes can be considered as works of art!

Where a couple chooses to have a three-tiered cake, the tradition is to keep the top tier for a christening cake, the bottom tier is distributed through the guests at the wedding ceremony while the middle tier is sliced up for those wedding guests unable to attend.

More and more couples are choosing to have less formal wedding cakes that symbolise something personal to them. For example we heard of a bride and groom who recently had a wedding cake in the form of Battersea Power Station!
